Political Climate
Tanzania is a multi party democratic country with its administration based on President, Parliament and Judiciary.

Geography
The United Republic of Tanzania lies in Eastern Africa, bordering the Indian Ocean on the east. It is bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north; Burundi, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo to the West; and by Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the South.

Capital ~ Dodoma
Dodoma (population 85,000) - a seat for the Union Parliament, Prime Minister?s office and the Ministry for Regional and Local Government.

Languages
Kiswahili and English are the official languages.

People & Population
Tanzanians are a warm, friendly and hospitable people. The population is mostly Bantu, the largest being the Sukuma and the Nyamwezi. There are 125 recognized tribes whose diverse Bantu, Nilotic and Haminic Vernacular languages, traditions and customs have great cultural appeal. This diversity also manifests itself in the unique ways of dressing including hair styles, local dances, paintings, hand-crafts, sculptures and gastronomy. The population also includes the popular and traditionalist Maasai and the Barbaigs around Lake Eyasi.

Entry Requirements
United States citizens are required to have a valid passport and a Visa, issued by the Tanzania Consulate Office in Washington, DC.

Health
Malaria is a problem in Tanzania, so it is advisable that everyone take a precautionary Malaria medicine as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended inoculations are Yellow Fever, Hepatitis and Tetanus.

Communications
Tanzania maintains a good network of telephone, cellular and satellite connections. Most hotels and lodges offer international telephone and fax services. Visitors should be advised that the farther from the city they travel, the more limited telephone service will be. It is advisable to check ahead with hotels or lodges to be sure.

Electricity
The electricity supply in Tanzania is 230 volts.

Climate and Best Time to Travel
The climate is warm and humid in coastal regions but regulated by sea breezes. Temperatures range between 24 and 28'C. October to mid-March is the hottest period and June to September, the coolest. However, the range of temperature is always limited: between 25 and 30'C on the coast and between 22 and 27'C in the highlands. The rainy season is from mid-March to the end of June.
