Small Group Exporations

WS VehicleFor savings, travel in packs! Let us taylor a special package for your small group of 6 to 15 people. Or, we can block into an already scheduled departure package. By spreading the cost of the vehicle, driver and guide over the maximum amount of passengers allowed in a vehicle we can help you reduce your per person costs. Even better is you'll have your own private driver/guide - just for your group. Some scheduled overland departures, such as the Exploration Safaris, have this built in but for single travelers - look for savings in reduced or non-existant single supplements..

For couples or small group travel, a good portion of your travel budget can get eaten up in the expense of just getting from one location to another. Since distances in Africa can be vast, the fewer flight travel and transfer expenditures you have can have a huge impact on your budget. Consider renting a car and driving yourself. Cape Town, the Garden Route and Eastern Cape are all areas easy to drive and to get around to various sightseeing venues. You can always request a GPS to make directions and locations simpler. This also adds to the adventure and Safariline can help with what you will need to secure a vehicle and obtain a proper international drivers license.
Below are a few itineraries that lend themselves well to self drives.

Buying Experiences better than Stuff

An assistant professor of psychology at San Francisco State University has found that buying 'experiences', such as vacations, give people more happiness than buying material things.
He studied 154 people ages 19 to 50 and found that experiences increased happiness because they are often social in nature and tend to make people feel more alive, therefore left with positive memories, a sort of return on their investment. The study came up with this conclusion; "For whatever you can afford, you'll maximize your happiness, and the happiness of others around you, if you spend it on a life experience"It doesn't matter how much money you spend either. Whether you spend a little or a lot on the life experience, you still have the same level of happiness.'

The study was presented at an annual meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology and will be published later this year in the Journal of Positive Psychology.

The Scoop on Zimbabwe

US Travel warning lifted! US, Japanese, and German governments have lifted their travel warnings on Zimbabwe. According to Germany's ambassador to Zimbabwe, Albrecht Cronze, the prevailing situation in Zimbabwe now no longer justifies the travel warnings and other countries are expected to follow suit in due course. The US government has noted the improving conditions in Zimbabwe and a State Department spokesperson says it lifted the warning because "there was a return of basic medical, food and fuel services."

If you are ready to see Zimbabwe, we have specials for that too! Call us for details on 6 night safari at 4 nights paid.

It's all in the Combinations

How do you do Africa on a budget? It's all in the combinations.
Combining levels of accommodations, seasonal specials and off season adventure travel all adds up to savings. We 'll show you just what to do.
Seasonal Considerations:
The rainy season in Africa does not necessarily mean steady downpours to contend with. Typically called the Green Season or Emerald Season this is a period where costs can be significantly less. Depending on the area, this may mean a thundershower in the afternoon, which soon clears up. Rain is nature's way of creating rotational grazing so that areas with permanent water have less pressure on them from animals during this time, than they do at the height of the dry season. For Southern Africa this means the period from January to March/April which is also the time of one of Africa's migrations when Botswana's Kalahari Desert comes alive. See:
Kalahari Plains - Green Desert Expedition

Visit South Africas Cape between July & August which is generally clear but cooler for incredible savings. East Africas Green Season from end March to end May may require a light jacket but keep in mind the rain brings on the color and for photographers those color contrasts make phenomenal pictures!

Specials & Discounts :
Incentives to travel are now popping up everywhere .. perhaps as a discounted nightly rate at hotels, buy three nights and get a night free, or similar offers.
Rates on airlines both domestic and international are now available in the form of extended shoulder or low seasons making it more affordable to fly. Lodges and hotels are giving away extra nights for free. Get together a group of friends or family - you may qualify for a free night depending on the number of travelers. Or make use of the "Safari Houses" available - typically a 4 bedroom house where your family and friends stay together to share the cost. This arrangement also offers your own private chef and Safari guide at absolutely stunning prices. (Robin Pope Safari Houses): See Emerald Season Robin Pope

Levels of Accommodations:
If you are going to Africa to see the game, consider using the bulk of your budget at the game viewing lodges. Since all your food and activities are included while on Safari - there won't be any "surprises" when you get there. If you combine your game stay with a city or cultural experience and enjoy the African Hospitality of the smaller bed and breakfast and small luxury hotels in between it will help stretch those travel dollars. Take advantage of the US$ to Rand exchange rate now - lock in your rate for travel to South Africa at exchange rates we haven't seen in several years!
